Internly vs. LinkedIn for Internships
September 2, 2026 · 5 min read
LinkedIn is where your career will live for the next forty years. It is also, for internship applications specifically, a place where the odds are stacked brutally against you. We build Internly, so read accordingly — but the numbers below aren't controversial.
The problem with applying on LinkedIn
Visibility is LinkedIn's product, and it cuts both ways: any decent internship posting is visible to tens of millions of students. Postings at name-brand companies routinely show "over 100 applicants" within hours — the true count is often in the thousands. "Easy Apply" made applying one click for everyone, which means an Easy Apply application is close to a lottery ticket. Recruiters openly admit they stop reading after the first few hundred.
What LinkedIn is unbeatable at
People. Finding the university alum who works on the exact team you want, seeing who posted the role, getting a 15-minute coffee chat that turns into a referral — no other platform comes close. A referred application skips the pile entirely. If you use LinkedIn only as a place to click Apply, you're using the least valuable part of it.
The long game. Your profile is your public résumé. Recruiters search it year-round. Keep it sharp regardless of where you apply.
What Internly does instead
Internly skips the visibility contest. It matches you against internships you actually qualify for — your field, your country, your pay floor — and when you swipe right, it does the application: fills the employer's form, answers the standard questions from your profile, and sends it from a dedicated application address so replies collect in one inbox with per-application status. It's a phone-first flow measured in seconds per application, not the 20+ minutes a typical employer portal costs.
At a glance
| Internly | ||
|---|---|---|
| Listings volume | Curated to what you qualify for | Enormous, all careers |
| Competition per posting | Normal applicant pools on employer portals | Hundreds to thousands |
| Who fills the forms | Internly | You (Easy Apply where offered) |
| Networking & referrals | No | The best there is |
| Reply tracking | One inbox, per-application status | Scattered across email/InMail |
| Best used for | Daily application volume | Turning targets into referrals |
The verdict
Not either/or. The strategy that works: run your application volume through Internly (and school-exclusive roles through Handshake), then spend your LinkedIn time on humans — find one person at each of your top ten targets and ask for fifteen minutes. Applications get you into normal-odds pools; referrals get you out of pools entirely; LinkedIn-the-job-board does neither.
